This is a hand-coloured photograph of Prince Frederick Duleep Singh (1868–1926), the second son of Maharaja Duleep Singh. He appears to have wrapped a shimmery piece of cloth around his upper body on top of his shirt and trousers, tied at the waist with a bejewelled belt. To complete the look, he has a gold embroidered jubba, or an outer robe, draped across his shoulders. Decorated in the typical Indian fashion, the jubba has paisley motifs and a gold band embellishing its edges. Frederick’s headdress is ornamented with a plumed sar-pesh and his footwear is the fancy gold embroidered leather khussa with the extended toe curling back. This photograph is very similar to a black-and-white photograph of the prince also in the Princess Bamba Collection published by Aijazuddin in Sikh Portraits by European Artists (p. 93).
